ABSTRACT:As you know until quite recently various accidents on seas with heavy casualties and environmental disasters had taken place.
Even assuming that somewhere the cause of these accidents and disasters could be mentioned as ships defective construction or old age, we as a former ship engineers suppose it is worth touching some aspects of these problems and making some conclusions.
Firstly- in what condition the ship might be, competent and effective crews operation is able to lessen calamity. Especially we wanted to accentuate the training of the engine rooms staff. In this connection failures in power plant in ports or in areas of intensive ship traffic or during a heavy storm can lead catastrophic consequences.
Secondly- at the time when there is a trend of maximal crew reduction, the ship owners should make timely providing with spare parts and repairs.
We can not furnish proofs now but our own experience and our colleagues who serve at sea give proof of the fact ship owners are trying to be economical at the quite expensive but very important spare parts.
