Elysium Initiative: Universities & High Schools

Elysium (Experience with Lyceums by Simulation and Ultimate Modeling) was successfully organized since 2016 by Simulation Team, Genoa University in cooperation with different High Schools. The interactive experience includes Simulation Lab Visit, Serious Game Competitions and Role Play Games.
Elysium goal is to stimulate young High School Talents by innovative scientific, technological and creative initiatives. The use of Modeling and Simulation (M&S) allows to experience challenging projects such as: Autonomous Systems protenging Oil Rigs, Driving an Heavy Truck within a Port, Disaster Relief, Anti Piracy Operations, Triage and Data Sampling by UAV within a Nuclear Plant, Safety Procedures into Industrial Facilies, Concert Organization as well as Construction of elements for a Moon Space Base.

Simulation is a Strategic Science able to address most complex problems and the Simulation Team, is a major excellence network in Modeling and Simulation. Simulation Team is an innovation leader on several methodologies including among the others MS2G (Modeling, interoperable Simulation & Serious Games), HBM (Human Behavior Modelling), SaaS (Simulation as a Service), Standards & Architettures, Mobile Training, Intelligent Agents, Smart Interactive Cave.

Simulation Team Labs in Genoa University represent an International Excellence and operate in many different sectors (from Defense to fine Arts, from Industry to Shipping) and in many different applicative areas (from training & education to capability development, from decision support to engineering). It is possible to experience 3D Immersive Environments, Innovative Caves, Interoperable Simulators as well as Serious Games using most advanced technologies and based on up-to-date standards.

Simulation Team and Industrial Applications

Simulation Team is very active in developing projects for real applications, especially in cooperation with Industries, Agencies and Enterprises; during Elysium the young students could see examples of these projects as well as real industrial machines, robots and AGV (Autonomous Guided Vehicles) used in Research and Development (R&D) initiatives within Polytechnic School of Genoa University.

UAV & Oil Rigs: Testing a real Serious Games and experiencing an EPC Project

Simulation Team provided different opportunities to High School students to experience challenges, to collaborate in innovative frameworks and to compete. Elysium addresses specific frameworks such as the theme of Platforms at Sea. During these experiences, the students learn how to operate Autonomous Systems, such as UAV (Unmanned Autonous Vehicles), USV (Unmanned Surface Vehicles) and UUV (Unmanned Underwater Vehicles), to protect an Oil Rig from potential threats; innovative sensors using data fusion and face recognition are integrated into the MS2G (Model, interoperable Simulator and Serious Game) proposed. In addition the students are engaged into a collaborative and competitive Role Play Game (RPG) applied to Project Management; the RPG involves a large plant EPC (Engineering, Purchasing, Construction and Commissioning) for a new Oil Rig to be realized in Liberia; the teams have to test platform landing operations with a rotary wing UAV and to simulate rig commissioning.

Simulation Exploratory Experience:
High Schools moving to Space

Simulation Exploration Experience (SEE) is lead by NASA in cooperation with Scientific Organizations and Societies such as SISO, SCS, Liophant, Simulation Team with support of many organizations. SEE is the evolution of Smackdown initiative carried out around the Globe since 2011 by the same organizations. The Sponsors involve leading companies in Interoperable Simulation such as Aegis Technologies, Pitch, VT Mäk and Forwardsim. The teams composed by students in Universities and in Internship in Companies and Institutions develop the different simulators to be integrated in the SEE/Smackdown Federation based on HLA Evolved. During the different editions best projects have been awarded by the Scientific Committee. Savona Campus of Genoa University is a major infrastructure including Innovative Labs, Accomodations for students, Sport facilities (e.g. soccer, tennis, pool) as well as Start Up and Companies Research Centers. Savona Campus was obtained from Italian MoD Barracks in '90 and currently includes fast web infratructures, micro grid using renewable energy, simulation labs, mobile labs, electric individual transport systems and many other unique opportunities for student to conduct experiments on advanced laboratories.

The Polytechnic School integrates Engineering and Architecture Departments of Genoa University (established 1471). The School benefits from creative talents able to integrate technology, innovation and art for developing the Future. Elysium is open to prestigious High Schools interested in developing the potential of their students. The initiative started in 2016 by involving the Classical Lyceum Chiabrera Martini and the Scientific Lyceum Cecioni. The students have the opportunity to be involved in Elysium by collaborating and competing in different challenges using Serious Games and Simulations.
